About the Role

As the Engineering Manager for the Program Foundations team, you will support 1 team of engineers (~8-10 software engineers and 2 quality engineers). Your fullstack team is aptly named, as it is responsible for building the foundational components that ensure our members (users) can get care for all of their needs in one cohesive experience.

You won't just be managing a team; you'll be solving fundamental user experience challenges that are critical to our members' health journeys. For example:

  • How do we make it easy for a member to manage their care when they are engaged in multiple programs concurrently?

  • How might we enable members to seamlessly transition between programs, such as moving from treating an acute injury to ongoing preventative care?

  • What are the core components of the end-to-end member experience that should be universal, and where should we build for variability?

This is a "player-coach" role for a leader who loves technology as much as they love people. We expect you to be deeply engaged in technical strategy, lead by example in code reviews and design discussions, and spend approximately 15% of your time contributing directly to the codebase. You’ll guide your team toward the right metrics and feedback loops to empower its continuous improvement. You will be deeply involved in the code and giving feedback to technical design docs.

To make sure there’s always just-enough valuable, shovel-ready work, you will work closely with stakeholders to prioritize the team backlog and establish goals for each sprint. To support their team’s continuous improvement, you will measure what matters most and lead blameless retros that convert insights into action.

We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our production systems rely on React Native, React, Node.js, TypeScript, Nestjs, GraphQL, Docker, Rails, AWS, Postgres, Redis, Apollo, and Redux. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA.

What You'll Accomplish

  • People Leadership: Hire, coach, and mentor a high-performing, diverse team of engineers. Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous feedback, and professional growth that makes your team a destination for top talent.

  • Technical Excellence: Drive the technical vision and architectural roadmap for the foundational components of our member experience. You will champion engineering best practices, improve system scalability, and ensure your team consistently ships high-quality, well-tested code in our CI/CD environment.

  • Product & Delivery: Partner closely with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to translate complex user needs into a clear, prioritized roadmap. You will own your team's delivery, ensuring they consistently meet their commitments and drive key business metrics.

  • Process Improvement: Lead initiatives to refine our agile and DevOps workflows, ensuring our processes are lightweight, effective, and continuously improving. You'll use data to guide blameless retrospectives that lead to meaningful action.

Hinge Health Hybrid Model

We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical degree

  • 8+ years of non-internship full time professional experience in the technology industry, with a focus on SaaS products and large-scale, complex systems

  • 2+ years of experience managing an engineering team of 4+ direct reports

  • 2+ years of experience in mentoring and leading team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and contributing to project planning and decision-making

  • 2+ years of experience resolving interpersonal conflicts and finding creative resourcing solutions where others would see zero-sum tradeoffs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building deep interactive experiences for Mobile Devices with React Native

  • Backend experience with technologies such as: Nestjs, Apache Kafka

  • Experience working in a regulated or high-compliance environment (e.g., healthcare/HIPAA, FinTech)

  • A track record of scaling teams and processes in a fast-growing startup environment

Compensation

This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. The annual salary range for this position is $200,000 - $300,000.
